9 Online Shops To Score Vintage — From Retro T-Shirts to Chanel

There’s something magical about shopping in your favorite vintage store — inspecting the racks hopefully for fresh, fabulous pieces from eras past, tenaciously foraging through the stock to root out the perfect, envy-inducing, one-of-a-kind gem. But, it takes time and commitment to physically leave the house and venture into a store, and besides, not all of us can cab on over to the best vintage hunting grounds in New York, Austin, or Portland in a snap. Thankfully, the top vintage purveyors from around the country have graced the Internet with their astutely edited treasure troves, so we can go on a virtual retail expedition — and in our pajamas, no less. To save yourself a Google search, you can check out our top nine picks to shop vintage online — from beat-up Levi’s and cheap '70s disco dresses to the holy grail of ultra-luxe Chanel handbags.

Resurrection
Founded in 1996 and boasting locations in Los Angeles and New York, Resurrection is basically the O.G. of high-end vintage destinations. Deep-pocketed retro-fashion fanatics click on over to peruse an impeccably edited selection of collectible womenswear from the likes of Azzedine Alaïa, Thierry Mugler, and Yves Saint Laurent, plus a killer assortment of designer handbags, including enough quilted Chanel 2.55s (and sometimes a Birkin, if you’re lucky) to bring you to tears. The site design is a tad vintage, too, if you know what we mean, but the offerings, organized mostly by designers, are pretty straightforward to navigate. Warning: Returns are for store credit only and must be made within three business days of purchase (read the fine print, for sure). So, think really hard before dropping the big bucks on the Hermès Constance that your dreams are made of.

Decades
Perhaps you remember Los Angeles vintage mainstay Decades from reality television, on the Dukes of Melrose on Bravo? But, even if you didn’t catch the hilarious bons mots and verbal sparring between owners Cameron Silver and Christos Garkinos, you can relive it all, sartorially, by shopping, well, decades' worth of sublime, red carpet-ready designer pieces from the '20s and beyond — from a pristine-condition Hermès Kelly bag to a Studio 54-ready beaded Halston gown. It’s no wonder the shop is a favorite for celebrities and stylists in need of a paparazzi-friendly dress. Pro tip: If you’re contemplating a piece but have questions, just email orders@decadesinc.com to inquire about the size, fit, anything before committing to an investment, especially since all sales are final. But, Decades does offer free domestic shipping on orders over $300, which, let’s be honest, is an amount you’d probably hit.

What Goes Around Comes Around
If you can’t travel to NYC or L.A. to browse the “world’s largest collection of vintage Chanel” (we know), then open up a tab and click onto What Goes Around Comes Around’s website. WGACA is the mecca for the aforementioned Jumbos and Minis (plus, loads of double-C-bearing jewelry), plus more drool-inducing accessories from the 1880s to 1990s by other mega-labels, including Louis Vuitton, Céline, Balenciaga, and Gucci. And, if you like to mix your opulent logos with authentic (read: non-mass-produced or from the mall) rocker T-shirts and perfectly worn-in denim, WGACA has you covered there, too. Even better: The store allows returns and exchanges (minus shipping fees) within 14 days of delivery.

Archive
This Austin-based shop and site specializes in perfect or near-perfect-condition designer womenswear and accessories from the '60s to the '90s. Think: Azzedine Alaïa, Christian Dior, Thierry Mugler, and, yes, Chanel. If you’re #blessed, you might even come across some pristine dead-stock (never-worn pieces). The site also features curated collections, currently Japanese (lots of conceptual Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake pleats) and dedicated YSL and Jean Paul Gaultier mini-e-boutiques. The site design is sleek and easy to browse, plus, each product description features a pop-up size guide and full-length and detail photos, including one of the label. (P.S.: Returns accepted for store credit or exchange only, less shipping costs.)

Ritual Vintage
Fashion types flock to this New York-based store with two downtown locations for pre-'50s menswear and womenswear, plus unique, hard-to-find pieces from the '60s to right now. Plus, we just can’t seem stop clicking around Ritual’s site. First, it’s way too easy to get caught up in the vividly descriptive — and extensive — backgrounders about each piece. They’re like immersive, little mini-novellas. Secondly, the stock is just so, so good. From a Mod, Empire-waisted and box-pleated Geoffrey Beene frock to a Prohibition-era, velvet-and-silk, ruffled, drop-waist confection, we want all the things. Third: genuine '20s-era flapper dresses from the Boardwalk Empire costume department. 'Nuf said. Just be ready to commit, because everything is final sale.

Reissued
Originally launched as a shopping app in 2014, Reissued added an online marketplace offering clothing, accessories, and home design from hand-picked vintage shops and sellers from around the country. The site is oh-so-pretty and Pinterest-y in design, complete with dreamy, Anthropologie-esque product shots and a dedicated “Library” section featuring interviews and Q&As with the latest merchants selling their wares. You can find anything from affordable, worn-in denim to '30s-era lace dresses to your own piece of '60s Americana for the living room (ceramic bull sculpture, anyone?). And, yes, you can take your vintage shopping experience with you, anywhere, anytime, with the Reissued app. All items are final sale.

Spanish Moss
Founded in 2006, this SoCal-based e-store originally found fame as an eBay shop run by Suzanne Carafano. Now, it’s an online treasure trove offering genuine concert T-shirts, exquisite Victorian and Edwardian gowns, and flowy '70s maxi-dresses that scream for today’s boho It girl to snap it all up. While an Ossie Clark goddess gown might set you back $448, there are plenty of excellent pieces well under $100. The product descriptions also list meticulous measurements and fabrics/materials, so assess carefully, because returns are accepted for credit only.

TheBestOnlineVintageShops_8_Anna_SuditAnna Sudit
Nasty Gal
It’s pretty much a no-brainer that Nasty Gal — your favorite online stop for abbreviated party dresses and the latest festival gear — would excel at vintage. After all, it’s fashion lore at this point that #girlboss and founder Sophia Amoruso started the online powerhouse in 2006 as an eBay vintage shop. Nasty Gal’s vintage section features womenswear heavy on party- and Coachella-ready dresses (because it’s Nasty Gal, duh) and cool accessories from all eras. The stock is heavy on the '80s and '90s, plus plenty of debatably vintage but definitely awesome early- and mid-'aughts designer pieces, such as a double-breasted Zaragoza Balenciaga blazer, by Nicolas Ghesquière. Nasty Gal also plans on releasing themed, retro-designer capsule collections throughout the year, so keep an eye out for those. More good news: Nasty Gal accepts returns within 30 days of receipt, just less a $5.99 fee and shipping costs.

Adored Vintage
If feminine, romantic dresses circa Downton Abbey, Masters of Sex, and/or Mad Men are your thaang, click on over to Portland-based Adored Vintage. The centerpiece of the adorably designed site is undoubtedly a profusion of irresistibly pretty, ultra-feminine dresses running from the elegantly demure '10s to the flashy '80s — and, all conveniently organized by decade. Adored also offers thoughtfully edited separates, swimwear, lingerie, bridal, accessories, and homeware, all at a wide range of price points, too (i.e., from $68 for a '70s gingham, fit-and-flare dress to $428 for a dreamy, Lady Mary-esque Edwardian web lace gown). Comprehensive product descriptions feature measurements, condition, and closures (like, how to put it on), and styling is just so, so lovely. Last note: Returns are accepted for store credit within 10 days of receipt, and exchanges require a 10% restocking fee.

Eminem's "Lose Yourself" In American Sign Language Is Wonderful

Eminem_EMBEDPhoto: Brian J. Ritchie/Hotsauce/REX USA
Not since Hurricane Sandy brought Mayor Bloomberg's expressive American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter Lydia Callis to the forefront of our attention has ASL received such a wonderfully impassioned showcase... until now. Be prepared to be inspired, and entertained, by a woman named Shelby Mitchusson, who recently posted a fantastic video on YouTube of herself performing Eminem's Oscar-winning 2002 hit "Lose Yourself" in American Sign Language.

Mitchusson, who has worked as a sign language interpreter in the past, recorded herself passionately signing the lyrics to the Eminem hit in front of a blank wall, channeling a bit of Marshall Mathers' attitude with a side-to-side sway and strong facial expressions. And while sign language performances of popular songs have certainly been done before (here's a fun version of Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off," for example), rarely have they been this fiercely watchable. (Should we pause for you to replay the video below, again?)

Thankfully, it looks like Mitchusson is working on a few more gems. "I am going to upload more videos soon," the Austin-native writes on her YouTube page. "I have a deep love for interpreting music and would love to share more as I am always interpreting music."

We can't wait.

Kim Kardashian Is "Exhausted" By Fertility Struggles

KimK_EMBEDPhoto: Everett Collection/REX USA
Kim Kardashian is utterly "exhausted" by her ongoing fertility issues, a new sneak peek clip for Keeping Up With the Kardashians posted by Us Weekly reveals. The reality star, author and entrepreneur, who bravely opened up earlier this week about her struggles to get pregnant for a second time with husband Kanye West, is seen looking tired but determined at a doctor's appointment in the all-too-relatable-for-all-too-many clip.

"I'm like so over it," Kardashian sighs, as her physician begins to detail next steps for the hopeful mom. "Like I'm exhausted, so I'm sure everyone gets to that point. I'm like, 'Okay, I'm done.'"

Kardashian, who is also expected to share on this evening's KUWTK that "an implanted embryo did not take," has openly been trying for a second child for some time and even underwent a procedure on her uterus on an earlier episode of the series.

With millions of women facing fertility issues every day, it can surely be a comfort to see that even the queen of the selfie herself is not immune to such struggles. Mrs. Kardashian-West, we wish you the very best of luck.

Woman's Diet Coke Request Shows How Awful It Can Be To Fly While Muslim

tahera-embedPhoto via Facebook
A young Muslim American woman's story of her experience on a flight this weekend has served to remind us, once more, that discrimination and hate are alive and well in this country. Tahera Ahmad, 31, is an associate chaplain at Northwestern University, and was flying on United Airlines from Chicago to Washington, D.C. on Friday for a conference about encouraging Israeli and Palestinian youth to engage in dialogue, CNN reports. And she dared to do two things: wear a hijab and ask her flight attendant to treat her like everyone else.

From the flight, she posted on Facebook about what happened: She ordered a Diet Coke was brought an opened can. When she asked the attendant for an unopened one, "due to hygienic reasons," the attendant responded, "Well I'm sorry I just can't give you an unopened can so no Diet Coke for you." Rude! Or, actually, more than rude, because the attendant then handed the man next to Ahmad an unopened can of beer, and clarified that the opening policy was, "so you don't use it as a weapon." Taken aback, Ahmad hoped her fellow passengers would bear witness to this blatant racial profiling. No such luck, as the man across the aisle yelled at her, "you Moslem, you need to shut the F** up."

Well, even those of us who haven't been racially profiled know that airplanes bring out the absolute worst in all people. And though we don't expect the Internet to be a more hospitable environment, in this case, it is. Since Ahmad's Facebook post on Friday night, her plight has gone viral, with the hashtag #UnitedforTahera. Many called for a boycott of United. It certainly helps that Tahera is not just any young woman in a head scarf, she's a leader who's visited the White House twice, to be honored for her work and to attend a Ramadan dinner with the president.

All of this caught the attention of the airline, which released a statement that's not the most apologetic we've ever seen: "The flight attendant onboard Shuttle America flight 3504 attempted several times to accommodate Ms. Ahmad's beverage request after a misunderstanding regarding a can of diet soda. ... Additionally, we spoke with Ms. Ahmad this afternoon to get a better understanding of what occurred and to apologize for not delivering the service our customers expect when traveling with us."

You can read Ahmad's none-too-happy response to making this all about the soda here. We've reached out to the airline for further comment and will update this story with any additional information.

The Super-Sneaky Ways The Sun Is Getting To You

The days spent at the beach without continuously lathering up (or spraying) your bod in sunscreen are over — at least, they better be! The importance of wearing SPF to protect ourselves from harmful rays and keep wrinkles and premature aging at bay has been drilled into our brains ('cause it's true!).

But, as it happens so often with healthy habits, once you adopt one, you find out ways you can be doing it even better. You may see what we're getting at here: You need to wear sunscreen a whole lot more often than you probably do — every day, in fact.

Those rays have devious ways of getting to your skin when you'd never expect it, even covered up! (Yes, even indoors.) Read on to discover all the sneaky ways the sun may be getting to your skin.

Like this post? There's more. Get tons of beauty tips, tutorials, and news on the Refinery29 Beauty Facebook page!

At Work
You're indoors all day at the computer (probably wishing you were feeling the sun outside), so you're certainly not leaving the office with a tan. But, what you can't see can hurt you — especially if you're next to a window.

You see, the sun gives off two types of rays: UVA and UVB. Rebecca Baxt, MD, a New York City dermatologist, explains that UVB rays are the ones responsible for giving the skin a tan or sunburn. They are strongest from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., less severe in the winter, and do not penetrate through glass. UVA rays are a whole different story. "They are responsible for changing the DNA in the skin, causing premature skin aging and skin cancer," explains Dr. Baxt. "UVA rays are approximately the same strength from summer to winter and can penetrate through windows. Simply put, these are the true damaging rays."

On A Cloudy Day
Don’t be fooled by cloud cover — you can get just as roasted on a foggy day as one with obvious sun. Probably, even more so, since you are less likely to put on SPF. “If you are working, playing, or swimming outside on a cloudy day, do not forget that sunscreen,” warns Dr. Baxt. “The clouds can give you a sense of security, but you can still be burned on a day with no visible sun.” Plus, those UVA rays we were just talking about can not only go through glass, but cloud coverage, too.

On A Plane
Unless they're treated with special solar filters, those damaging UVA rays can also sneak through airplane windows, says David Colbert, MD. They may be small, but at 20,000 feet you are a lot closer to the sun, thus getting a much higher dose. So, if you opt for the window seat for your next flight, apply a layer of sunscreen before you take off just to be safe.

In Your Car
Even more so than on a plane, it's important to be cautious in the car. Many of us drive with our arms rested out the window, and even if not, those rays are still getting in there. “There are many cases each year of people who get melanoma on their left forearm because they rested it in the sun,” says Dr. Baxt. “This is an even bigger concern for those who drive frequently.” So, next time you're stuck in traffic, take that downtime to lather on a little SPF.

Through Your Clothes
Even if you’re the one who always throws a beach cover-up over your bathing suit, the sun may still be getting to your skin if you’re not properly protected. The SPF of clothing varies from about a 4 with looser knit fabric to about a 12. We’re not suggesting you wear denim to the beach, but you can create more protection if you choose vivid colors. Who doesn’t love a bright caftan poolside, anyway?

In The Water
If you’re in the direct sun, Dr. Baxt recommends reapplying your sunscreen every two hours. But, if you're jumping in the ocean waves or dipping in and out of a pool, you need to reapply every hour — even if you're using waterproof sunscreen. If you're on water — you know, boats, jet skis, paddle boards — be aware that you’re getting reflected light from its surface. For you surfers, always wear a rash guard. They protect you from irritation and from the sun.

Through Your Sunscreen
“You may think that you are protecting your skin by slathering on that sunscreen, but you need to take a few precautions to make sure you get the protection you need,” says Dr. Baxt. “Only a sunscreen labeled ‘broad-spectrum’ protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.” The SPF factor makes a difference, too. You might opt for 15 thinking you still want to get a tan, but with that you will absorb more UVB rays. “A sunscreen with an SPF of 50 protects you from 98% of the UVB rays, while one with an SPF of 15 only blocks 93% of those same rays,” explains Dr. Baxt.

On Your Scalp
You’ve got the right SPF, you’re applying it often enough, but are you getting it on all the right places? Melanoma is often found on the scalp, so be sure to put a little sunscreen onto the line of your part. Plus, a sunburn on your head is no fun.

The Best YouTube Tutorials For Monolid Makeup

Growing up with monolids was a confusing experience for me. Most of the models and celebrities we see in the media have what many call double eyelids, or eyelids that have visible creases. Makeup looks and tutorials for double-eyelid gals don't always work for those with single lids. I've had so many friends over the years who felt like they couldn't wear eye makeup because they didn't know the right application techniques for their monolids — it's easy to think that double eyelids are the coveted beauty standard.

For those of you who aren't familiar, monolids, mono eyelids, or more technically, epicanthic folds, are all terms used to describe eyelids that cover the inner corners of the eyes, creating a “crease-less” effect. They're usually associated with people of Asian descent, but the trait can be seen in many Europeans and Africans as well.

Monolids are absolutely gorgeous, and with the extra lid space they present the opportunity to experiment with a host of different looks. And, guess what? There are many monolid makeup tutorials out there, and we've gathered up a few of our favorites to show you.

Check 'em out ahead. But, keep in mind that everyone is different. What works for your friend may not work for you. That's why, like with all things beauty, it's all about enhancing what you've got and figuring out a foolproof method that works for you.

How Nicole Richie Does Late-Spring Layering

The summer bug hit us hard over Memorial Day — and now, it's hard to want to slip on any item of clothing that fully covers our limbs. However, Mother Nature isn't quite with it yet. A bright, clear day can turn into an unusually chilly night — one that makes you check the calendar to make sure we are, indeed, almost in June. While this finicky weather wreaks havoc on our wardrobe choices, Nicole Richie has devised a pretty effective way to counteract unpredictable temperatures: You have to layer.

Richie was spotted in L.A. mixing staples from opposite seasons. She paired a summery, scallop-hem dress with a more winter-appropriate, black turtleneck. This form of late-spring layering is a very chic solution to our tricky-weather-dressing woes. Nicole's accessories did not disappoint: Colorblocked Saint Laurent oxfords, House of Harlow sunglasses, and a Balenciaga tote rounded out the very luxe look, while an asymmetric, cropped blazer lent a put-together feel to the entire ensemble.

The takeaway: Even the unwelcome, pre-summer chill can look pretty good. Just re-create Richie's look — like we did below — and the under-60ºF forecast won't feel so terrible.

7 Rad Sales That Spilled Over From Memorial Day Weekend

If you’re still ecstatic from last week's Memorial Day sales (or you missed out because you were outta town), fear not, because we're back to serve up another digestible helping for this TGIF moment. This time, we're scoping out the ongoing, mid-season sales so you can stock up on all those work-to-beach essentials your heart desires. From Aritizia's big-time, everything-off sale to Oxygen Boutique's well-timed discounts on the remaining Band of Outsider pieces, click ahead for the stuff you need to nab this weekend.

Revolve
If you're looking for "model-off-duty" inspiration — easy apparel and accessories from high-end brands — our main squeeze Revolve is bound to have it at a fraction of the cost. The site always seems to have a huge ongoing sale, but this week, we suggest scooping up a selection from the very last Marc by Marc Jacobs collection (R.I.P.).

What we're buying:

NET-A-PORTER
Net-a-Porter is the retailer that keeps on giving. Items at the luxury-heavy store are already up to 50% off, and the site is continually adding designers to their sale section. Which means that these sandals we told you about are still shoppable — along with a ton of other stuff, too.

What we're buying:

Cole Haan
You can always count on Cole Haan to be a solid standby when it comes to professional workwear. And, with up to 50% off its merch, you can feel good about stocking up on those cute sandals and totes.

What we're buying:

Aritzia
Literally, everything (we repeat: everything) from the SS15 collection at Canadian brand Aritzia is between 20% and 50% off. We don't know why, and we're not asking questions. With hundreds of items on discount — jumpsuits, tanks, sleeveless dresses, cropper pants, and so much more — we just might buy out the entire site.

What we're buying:

Oxygen Boutique
With this week's announcement that Band of Outsiders is bowing out (and, here's our second R.I.P.), we're doing our part to bid farewell to this brand the only way we know how — by buying something that will eventually become a keepsake. And, with Oxygen Boutique offering goods up to 50% off, it makes the goodbye process a bit easier.

What we're buying:

Nanette Lepore
Bathing suits! If you haven't gotten around to getting one yet, you need to do that. And, if you already have a good collection going, you may as well add one more, right? With suits up to 40% off at playful NYC brand Nanette Lepore, have yourself a big splash.

What we're buying:

West L.A.
It's a fact: When it comes to summer wear, Los Angelenos do it better (they are experts, after all). Hop on over to the aptly named boutique West L.A. right now for the best scores on sheer minidresses, funky swimsuits, must-have sunglasses, and more, all up to 40% off.

6 Looks That Are All-Black, But Still Work For Summer

What Would Happen If The Sun Never Set?

unnamed-1Photo: Courtesy Of Sunglass Hut.
Some summer days are so good, you just don't want them to end. You know, when your daytime plans extend so far into the evening, you forget how late it actually is. Well, Sunglass Hut is on the same page.

The brand that keeps you well shaded on the brightest days is looking to keep the daylight going — literally, thanks to the first-ever crowd-powered sun — at its Electrify Your Summer tour, which is popping up in L.A. this Saturday. If we lost you at crowd-powered sun, allow us to explain. The dance floor's tiles will absorb the energy from the crowd's movement to power sunlight lamps. Translation: The harder you dance, the sunnier the forecast.

So, if you're in L.A. on May 30, gather your friends and hit the dance floor at The Brig Lot in Venice Beach from 2 to 9 p.m. The summer bash will feature all the party essentials: live music (provided by local talents Monogem and DJ Whitney Fierce), photo booths, local eats, custom tattoos, and a pop-up shop with the latest shades from Sunglass Hut.

How late can you stretch the day? It's totally up to your moves. If you ask us, we'd say this is the time to perfect your Electric Slide (wink, wink).

The Brig Lot is located at 1515 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice, CA. No RSVP required. Upcoming tour dates: Chicago, June 6 to 7; Miami, June 13 to 14; NYC, June 20 to 21.

Paris Jackson & Beau Make Their Red Carpet Debut As A Couple

ParisJackson_spl1034734_001_52915INTROMatt Baron/Rex USA
Paris Jackson and boyfriend Chester Castellaw made their very first red carpet appearance, as a couple, at Deaf West Theatre’s production of Spring Awakening last night in Beverly Hills. The teenage pair looked sweet and carefree on the step-and-repeat. It seems like their relationship, which has been well-documented on social media, is going strong.

It's good to see 17-year-old Paris out and about: Next month marks the sixth anniversary of her famous dad's passing, as well as two years since her own suicide attempt. The King of Pop's death took a tough toll on his kids, but thankfully Paris is looking healthier — and happier — than ever.

The young couple appeared out on the town in the midst of engagement rumors. Paris's family has denied that the ring she's wearing — and clearly playing down in these pictures — signifies wedding bells: According to reports, it's only a promise ring. Either way, Castellaw is loud and clear about how he feels about his girlfriend. The soccer player's Instagram account is evidence to that effect: His profile says that soccer is life, and "Pari is my babe." Only time will tell where the two will end up!

What To Do When You're Caught Lying To Your Boss

lyingatwork_introDesigned by Elliot Salazar.
When caught in a lie at work, you tell yourself it's no big deal: Everyone else has done it. In my case, I was 16, and I twisted my ankle while I was out drinking the night before. After spending the afternoon in the E.R. (convinced it was broken), I called in sick to my part-time retail job and told them I wouldn’t be in because I couldn’t walk.

It would have worked had I stayed at home instead of rounding up friends and going to the movies to celebrate a night off. Because as soon as we got there, I saw him: my supervisor — the very one I’d spoken to hours before, who’d accepted my lie that I was practically immobile.

“I thought your ankle was broken,” he said, standing in the popcorn line.

“It’s sprained,” I said, trying to sound technical. “Which is why I’m here: I can just put it up and watch a movie.”

He nodded, and I limped away dramatically. When I returned to work, I was put on probation. My managers told me that if I ever called in sick again (since I’d been doing it regularly), I’d have to have a doctor’s note or I’d be fired on the spot. Getting caught was enough to convince me to stop with the lies. When I moved on to a hostess job a year later, I never called in sick (even when I really was), and even now, I’m nervous about canceling plans. Why didn’t I just stay at home? Why did I call in sick at all?

Career expert Lauren McGoodwin says that work lies don’t tend to come from malicious places and usually, they’re the result of do-or-die situations. (Like seeing your supervisor in a popcorn line.)

"I don’t know if people consciously lie at work, but I think it mostly happens when you’ve been put on the spot or haven’t met an expectation of your boss,” she explains. “It’s those times when you’re surprised by the question and you give a quick answer without even thinking it all the way through.”

Which is what happened to Justine, who got busted by her boss after claiming that her hangover was food poisoning.

“I was just out out of college, and working at a small magazine as a copy editor,” she recalls. “I went out after work one night and had one too many whiskeys, and when my alarm went off in the morning, there was just no way I could get out of bed, let alone make it to the office. I couldn’t admit I had a massive hangover, so I emailed my boss — the editor in chief — and said that I had food poisoning and would be out for the day.

“I ordered a grilled cheese and spent the rest of the day watching TV,” she continues. “But, I had longstanding dinner plans that night that I just couldn’t get out of, so I pulled it together, and cabbed it to the restaurant — a totally obscure place on the Upper East Side that I had never even heard of.

“Well apparently, not obscure enough. My boss and his wife were seated at the next table. Totally mortified, I doubled down on the original fib, sheepishly explaining that I still wasn’t feeling well, but I just couldn’t cancel these plans. He probably didn’t buy it, but he was very cool about the whole thing, and after I stammered through my explanation, he cordially said he hoped I felt better by Monday, and we never spoke of it again.”

Arguably, Justine and I were lucky: McGoodwin suggests the best course of action (and the key to avoid further repercussions) is to admit your mistake and earn some credibility back.

“I honestly think the best thing is to own it,” she advises. “Most of the time, your boss isn’t going to say, ‘You lied.’ They might ask why something doesn’t add up, why something wasn’t completed when you said it was, etc. So, that’s a great time to let them know that you misspoke or missed your estimated timeline for a project’s completion. And make sure you follow through — and, better — exceed the expectations you set after.”

Kind of like how Amelia managed to exceed her own expectations after being caught during a faux sick day.

“I was working as a ghostwriter at NYU while I was in grad school there, and I wasn’t allowed any personal days — only sick days,” she remembers. “It was finals week, and I called in sick so I could spend the day editing my papers in my backyard at the time, the High Line [which] ran outside my bedroom window.

“At some point, a friend walked by and stopped to chat, took a ‘Look who I ran into on the High Line!’ photo, posted it on Facebook, and therein lies the epic scolding I got the next day at work. I did get an A on the paper, though.”

But, even in situations like these, McGoodwin assures that there’s still a good chance you can come back from being in your boss’ bad books.

“[When it comes to apologies], less is more,” she advises. “Don’t over-explain or give excuses. Apologize and let them know you’ll make a note of this for the future so it doesn’t happen again. The worst thing is to spend a lot of your boss’ time giving your explanation.”
What if there is no coming back? Or, what if you get caught and straight-up don’t care? That’s what happened to Scarlett*, who, after being caught in a lie by her boss, realized she was ready for a new gig.

“I was away [for] the weekend to see my friends’ [band] on tour,” she recalls. “I was having a shitty time at work, so I thought, Fuck it. I’ll go away for the weekend. I was having so much fun I didn’t want to go back, so I stayed on the tour bus, but unbeknownst to me, the bus was driving to Dublin.

“I woke up in Dublin and was going to leave in time to get back for Monday, but then Beyoncé BeyHive tickets happened and I was forced to stay. And, I realized: I don’t need a bossman. I can do this on my own somewhere else, some other way.”

Of course, it helped that this revelation was brought to light via direct eye contact with Beyoncé during a rendition of "Independent Woman."

“I did fly home eventually [after the concert],” Scarlett says. “I rolled into the office straight from the the airport after a 24-hour ‘bug,’ and my boss asked if I’d been at home because he recognized the clothes I was wearing from the week before.”

Scarlett, inspired by her epic Bey adventure, quit her job a few months later, moved away, and has since found her niche as a freelancer.

McGoodwin agrees that sometimes the best course of action is just to move on — especially if you’ve buried yourself in a pit from which you can’t emerge. Think: stealing or libel.

“If there is no coming back from the lie — like you stole something — then it might be best for both parties that you move on,” she agrees. “The other is when you made a mistake, have been working for a good amount of time to repair the relationship, and there is zero change with your boss or they continue to pass you for opportunities because of the past. If your boss can never move on, then you should move on.”

But perhaps the most surprising revelation is that less people lie at work than we think (or at least than are willing to admit it). When trying to crowdsource tales of work-centric deceit, I found that most accounts had one thing in common: An employee lied about being sick and/or injured, ultimately got caught not being sick and/or injured, and that was it. Also, most of these stories took place years ago, well before many of us found ourselves in our current careers.

Next time you’re tempted to lie at work and you tell yourself that everybody does it, remember: You’re ultimately lying to yourself. Unless you have actually taken yourself to the movies with a broken foot.

You Won't Believe What A Casting Director Told Gina Rodriguez

0gina2Photo: Matt Baron/BEImages.
So, being an actress isn't the picnic it may seem to be. Gina Rodriguez shared just how frustrating and superficial Hollywood can be with this anecdote about clueless casting directors.

"I was up for a role and auditioned in character," the Jane the Virgin star says in The Hollywood Reporter's funny-lady round-table chat. "They're like: We love her. But can she come back in with a tight black dress?'

"I said, 'That doesn't make any sense for the character,' she adds. "They were like, 'We need to know if you're pretty enough to be on the cover of a magazine.'"

Oof. Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross reveals her own Hollywood horror story.

"I tested once for a network show to play a lawyer," she shares. "A Harvard-educated motherfuckin' lawyer, OK? I wore a skirt suit and heels. Seemed appropriate. Then there were many discussions about my hair. They'd printed up all these pictures of me from 15 fuckin' years ago and had me in and out of the bathroom trying on clothes. They finally pick a skirt — the shortest I brought. Then got a T-shirt from one of the people in the office. The woman says, 'Hmmm, your boobs.' I was like, 'I didn't bring a bra for this T-shirt.' She screams down the hall, 'Who wears a 34B?' I put on someone else's bra, a size too small, and somehow auditioned. I remember wondering, 'What did I just allow myself to do?' The other actress [who auditioned] was dressed like she was going to a club and got the role. It was one of those moments where you're so confused and humiliated. But that's part of the biz."

Ah, good ol' Hollywood sexism. Where would we be without it?

Meet Fangirl of the Day: Annie

Read original article here: Meet Fangirl of the Day: Annie

zphoto_sep_20_1_38_47_pm

Name of Fangirl: Annie

Fangirl’s Occupation: Elementary school teacher (5th grade)

What is her Fangirl interest?

Annie has been a Star Wars fan since the beginning, missing out on only the very first Bantha Tracks newsletter. She is also ardent about Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, The Wizard of Oz, Marvel, and Indiana Jones, among others.

Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this Fangirl?

Annie passes on the Fangirl legacy to scores of a new generation, arranging all sorts of Star Wars-themed activities through her school that teach her students about friendship, faith, the power of reading and creativity, the dark side vs. the light, female empowerment – all the qualities imbedded in the Star Wars universe.

How does this Fangirl express her fandom?

Annie has always been a trend-setter, embracing the Star Wars fandom even during the “lean years” of support and collecting. She was wearing a “Jedi in Training” t-shirt the day she met her husband and had vintage Han and Leia action figures as their cake topper when they got married – many years before that became the popular norm.

What is her favorite quote or personal motto?

“Truly wonderful the mind of a child is.”

What is her favorite Fangirl item that she cannot live without?

To narrow it down to one item would be virtually impossible, but I don’t think a day goes by that she’s not wearing at least one of the Her Universe Star Wars charms around her neck.

Your Champagne-drinking girl gang, because an Alice Smith show is no place to be without your ladies.

The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter's music is a mix of rock, pop, and R&B. She's only scheduled to perform two shows this summer: One in L.A. and one in San Francisco, so you better take advantage of the opportunity to see her live while you can.

This is a throwback, two-for-one concert featuring Peter Frampton and the '70s band Cheap Trick, all of whom give Mick Jagger a run for his money in the old-dudes-that-rock arena. You know we'll be on our feet for "I Want You To Want Me."

Where: The Greek Theatre, 2700 North Vermont Avenue (near Vista del Valle Drive); 323-665-5857.

Where: The Staples Center, 1111 South Figueroa Street (near West 11th Street); 213-742-7100.

The Concert: FYF Fest

Whom to take:
Your entire Saturday-night posse, because the only thing that makes a music festival more fun is a rowdy crew to enjoy it with.

When it comes to your FYF Fest companions, wallflowers need not apply. Bring pals who can rock out with you at this DTLA festival, where you'll be able to catch Solange, Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, Morrissey, Bloc Party, and many, many more awesome acts.

"Don't Stop Believin'" — need we say more? This legendary band has been going at it since 1973, and their iconic songs are just as good as ever, making this the perfect cross-generational concert.

When: Saturday, June 20, 8 p.m.
Where: The Hollywood Bowl, 2301 Highland Avenue (near Odin Street); 323-850-2000.

The Concert: Florida Georgia Line

Whom to take:
Your friend who hasn't stopped blasting "Cruise" for the last three years (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em).

It's true: Florida Georgia Line does have other songs besides "Cruise," and you can witness them live at the band's forthcoming concert in August.

When: Thursday, August 27, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Rabobank Arena, 1001 Truxtun Avenue (near N Street), Bakersfield; 661-852-7300.

The Concert: Ingrid Michaelson

Swift will be in L.A. for a whopping five different nights in late August as part of her 1989 World Tour, so you have ample opportunity to see her — and opener Haim, too!
